40-Day Mantra Meditation

As I told some people in our Reiki Discussion Group on Facebook, I will be starting a 40 Day Mala Practice using my mala prayer beads and the Sanskrit Mantra Om Namah Shivaya. My intention in doing this is to start a daily practice and to deepen my connection to Spirit. I invite you to join me, we are starting on the Summer Solstice. I will be doing my meditations in the morning, you are free to do yours at any time that works for you, you can also choose whichever Mantra or Affirmation feels good to you.

What are Mala beads/Prayer beads??

Simply put, prayer beads are a tool that is used to keep track of the number of repetitions a prayer, mantra, or affirmation is said. Keeping track in this manner frees your mind to concentrate on the mantra without having to count the repetitions. Many different religions around the world use prayer beads. There is the Catholic Rosary, the Tibetan Malas, Japanese Prayer beads, Islamic prayer beads. They differ slightly, but all have the same basic concept of keeping track of repititions whilst chanting a mantra.

The Catholic Rosary typically consist of 5 Decades (10 beads separated by a large bead between decades) attached to a chain that has the crucifix, 1 large, 3 small and 1 large bead.

The Buddhist mala consists of 108 beads that represent the 108 afflictions that the human consciousness must pass through before becoming an enlilghtened being. Here are some other excellent reasons why 108 beads are used. Buddhist malas also come in varieties with 18, 27, and 54 beads, and the sequence is repeated 6, 4, and 2 times.

Why 40 Days?

According to Yogi Bhajan, if you practice a mantra a few times, you receive great benefit. But if you want to permanently change your habits, you should practice your chosen mantra every day, for the same amount of time each time.

40 Days- Will break any negative habits that block you from the expansion possible through the mantra.

90 Days- Will establish a new habit in your conscious and subconscious mind based on the mantra

120 Days- Will confirm the new habit of consciousness created by the mantra. The positice benefits of the mantra get integrated permanently into your psyche.

1000 Days- Will allow you to master the new habit of consciousness that the mantra has promised. No matter the challenge, you can call on this habit to serve you.

What does Om Namah Shivayah mean?

According to texts, this chant enables the person to have deep spiritual experiences, and opens connection to the divine, when practiced deeply and correctly.

The meaning of the chant:

~ OM - Before there was a Universe, there was a vibrationless void of pure existence. Out of this void came the vibration which started the Universe, which is known as OM

~ Namah - Translates to "bow"

~ Shivayah - This is Shiva, but more, it means the Inner Self

When taken together it means "I bow to Shiva/my Inner Self"
